Before discovering the Bossons glacier, let's have a look at the vocabulary...
- Glacier: A glacier is a massive body of ice formed in high-altitude areas where snow doesn't completely melt in the summer. It slowly moves downhill under its own weight.
- Sérac: A sérac is like an iceberg on a glacier. It's a large block of ice that has broken off from the glacier, often due to crevasses or steep slopes. They can have very varied and impressive shapes.
- Crevasse: A crevasse is a large crack in the ice of a glacier. These cracks form when the glacier moves over uneven terrain or when the ice melts.
- Moulin: A moulin is a vertical shaft that forms in the ice of a glacier. Meltwater seeps into crevasses and erodes these shafts, creating a kind of icy well.
The Bossons Glacier is the largest ice cascade in Europe, starting at the summit of Mont Blanc at 4810 meters and ending today at around 1500 meters above sea level! It travels about 7 kilometers on an average slope of 28%, which is quite dizzying, isn't it?
You can admire this glacier from your room at the Big Sky Hotel, but also from the terrace and the dining room! Don't miss the sunset over the Bossons Glacier, which takes on a rosy hue just before the sun disappears behind the Aravis mountain range!
